The logo has been around since the 6th century BC, although the current era of logo design started around the 1950’s.
A logo is a strong graphical mark or emblem most commonly used by commercial companies and organisations. Logos can be a graphical symbol or a logo typeface or both with logo typefaces containing words.
Logos are about identification, a graphical representation of a company or individual and there are some fantastic examples of great logo designs which have stood the test of time and are now thought of as icons. Think of the Nike ‘tick’. You know it represents Nike without there being the word ‘Nike’ next to it. Thats Brand identity.
Good logo design isn’t just about drawing up a symbol or words but also about how it represents the company or individual its being designed for. A lot of it is down to getting the brand right and being able to identify through a logo. Logo design and brand identity or linked and so when you get a logo designed think of how well you or your company is being understood. Is this reflected in the logo? Will it stand out on its own? Does it represent you?
